Pink Lily II

Pretty little lily, the same as yesterday- I was expecting it to change more, but apparently that takes a lot longer for lilies than for peonies! So, out of the shot glass and under the light in a different pose today.

Last year I received a lovely little lily plant for Mothers' Day- this year it is back and much bigger, with at least a dozen blooms. I went out in the rain today to pick one to paint.

I brought picked a magnolia flower from the tree on the way back to the studio to paint, and it smelled so wonderful. You can really sense that from the painting I believe.

Sometimes I have absolutely no idea what to paint for the day. Those days I go rummaging on the bookshelves.

Something pretty, that's all. The siberian irises in my yard are all yellow or purple- this beautiful pink one is at the botanical gardens in Chapel Hill.

Because avocados are really wonderfully paintable. That is really the only reason. Also I've been playing more with color and changing up the colors while keeping the values consistent.

White Flame

sold

The exact same peony, just a day later! Didn't move as much this time, thank goodness. And I experimented a bit with the textures and some of them came out beautifully.

Peony

9"x12"
sold

I knew a peony would be really hard to paint- all those delicate pale petals, all that subtle contrast, the darn thing moving around the whole time..... but it was even more of a challenge than I expected! Well, it is good to have challenges. As a general rule.

A deer quietly gazing into the sunlight.... she was wonderfully unafraid, it's usually harder to catch one casually looking away from you!

Spoonbill

I'm not sure how I feel about this one, but I'm sharing it because the light came out just wonderful. I don't think I've developed a proper visual vocabulary for painting spoonbills though.

Sometimes it feels like I ought to do every painting twice- once to get everything realistic and "right" and the next time to add drama and play with the light and the brushstrokes.

Another tiger, because they are enormous and magnificent creatures. With weird stripes and very thick whiskers. Also if they have access to a walkway over the humans they will totally use it to scare the living daylights out of the humans, like any self respecting kitty cat.
