Bringing Back the Sun

20"x20"
available in an auction on facebook

A big beautiful unicorn still life! Chickadee bring back the sun, of course, and oranges represent it, and unicorn skulls are just generally magical to paint.

Ok, just for the record, painting shadows on a patterned surface is HARD. But that pillow is just irresistible

another detail....

Another detail on another larger painting.... submitted to a juried show now, which is something I haven't done in ages and ages. And yes, those are carolina parakeets.

detail of an upcoming work....

Do you see how the little chickadee just saw its reflection in the unicorn horn?!? I am so proud of that omg. So this is a detail of a 20"x20" piece I just finished for the Strange Dream's Art Collective's Mystic Animals auction, it opens on February 15th. No daily painting happened today because I've got three bigger pieces with a deadline of like now so.... yeah, you know how it is. Do you recognize the chickadee from yesterday's daily though?

Last little fishy for a minute, I believe. Pretty shiny creatures, reflecting off of the surface of their world. Flying.

I suppose this was inevitable, with all my interest in painting magical underwater worlds! But my goodness what a challenge all those little tendrils are!

Swimming

When in doubt, paint a sea turtle. Also when working on other, much bigger and less sea turtley paintings, paint a tiny sea turtle.

Elk on Blue

All about those antlers. Elk are unfamiliar to me, once upon a time they were common here, but, well.... colonization and all that. They've been successfully reintroduced up in the mountains though, and will certainly spread this way! This gorgeous fellow is part of the herd at the zoo.

I was going for something really solid and monumental here, even in the tiny daily painting size, the cat in real life is rather overwhelming!

Shimmery little thing....

Bubbles

5"x7"

This is an odd one. So, North Carolina is the global epicenter of salamander diversity. Which is absolutely amazing, and the poor dears are very sensitive to pollution and definitely deserve protection. There's also some in a few absolutely gorgeous little tanks in the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. I've been very much in love with all the textures and magic in those little tanks, but not any idea how to tackle all that green beauty, but it was haunting me. So here's a first go of it, focusing on a small piece, just some bubbles caught in the moss below the waterline.

Allright, back to normal tomorrow, promise. At least a hiatus from the nekkidness because I met some interesting fish recently who really want to be painted. But this whole Sorolla thing is seriously educational, and also I now really need a shiny pink blanket.
